RUSS111 Beginners' Russian I Course Page

Description: For students with little or no background in Russian, the course emphasizes oral communication while developing basic listening, reading and writing skills. Cultural practices are taught as an integral part of the language. Note: not to be taken by students with credit in RUSS 100, or with native or near native proficiency, or with Russian 30 or its equivalents in Canada and other countries. Two lab hours online/not scheduled.

RUSS211 Second-Year Russian I Course Page

Description: Russian grammar, composition, oral practice. Prerequisite: RUSS 112 or consent of Department. Note: not to be taken by students with credit in RUSS 201 or 202.

RUSS212 Second-Year Russian II Course Page

Description: This course is a continuation of RUSS 211. Prerequisite: RUSS 211 or consent of Department. Note: not to be taken by students with credit in RUSS 202.

RUSS303 Russian in Context I Course Page

Description: The continued development of grammatical and conversational skills, with reading contemporary Russian and viewing and discussing films and television programs. Prerequisite: RUSS 212 or consent of Department. Note: not to be taken by students with credit in RUSS 401 or 402.

RUSS304 Russian in Context II Course Page

Description: Debates on topics selected by students. Prerequisite: RUSS 303 or consent of Department. Note: not to be taken by students with credit in RUSS 401 or 402.

RUSS325 Readings in Russian Literature I Course Page

Description: Study of pre-20th century Russian literature. Readings and discussion normally in English, but discussion may be in Russian.

RUSS326 Readings in Russian Literature II Course Page

Description: Reading and analysis of texts from 20th century Russian literature. Readings and discussion normally in English, but discussion may be in Russian.

RUSS333 Saints and Sinners Course Page

Description: Religious and anti-religious themes in Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, highlighting the reflection of Russian Orthodox and popular culture in the texts. This course is taught in English and will not fulfill the Language other than English requirement.

RUSS403 Russian Media and Internet Course Page

Description: Study of popular media in today's Russia. Intensive reading, critical discussions, and creative writing. Taught in English. This course will not fulfill the Language Other Than English requirement of the BA.

RUSS404 Russian Language and Film Course Page

Description: Use of contemporary Russian films and television to improve the practical language and literacy skills both orally and in writing. Prerequisite: RUSS 304 or consent of Department.

RUSS443 Russian-English Translation Course Page

Description: Exercises in translation with emphasis on both literary and non-literary texts. Prerequisite: RUSS 304, or consent of Department. Not open to students with credit in RUSS 441 or 442.
