AUPHY104 Introductory General Physics I (Mechanics) Course Page

Description: Content is the same as that of AUPHY 102, but is designed for a student who has credit in Physics 30. Prerequisites: Physics 30 and Mathematics 30-1. Notes: The course does not count toward the major in Mathematics and Physics or the minor in Physics. Credit may be obtained for only one of AUPHY 104, 102, 110.

AUPHY110 Mechanics Course Page

Description: Vectors, kinematics, work, energy, momentum, dynamics, and periodic motion. Prerequisites: Mathematics 30-1; Physics 30 is recommended. Corequisite: AUMAT 110 or 116. Note: Credit may be obtained for only one of AUPHY 110, 102, 104.

AUPHY120 Waves, Thermodynamics, and Optics Course Page

Description: Oscillatory motion, waves on a string, sound waves, interference of waves, temperature, heat, entropy, first and second laws of thermodynamics, geometric optics, interference of light. Prerequisites: AUPHY 102 or 104 or 110; AUMAT 110 or 116. Note: Credit may be obtained for only one of AUPHY 120, 106.

Description: Electric fields, Gauss's law, magnetic fields, Ampere's law, Faraday's law, induction, direct and alternating currents. Prerequisites: AUPHY 110 and AUMAT 112.

AUPHY260 Introduction to Relativity and Quantum Mechanics Course Page

Description: Special relativity; photons and matter waves; Bohr atom model; Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle; Schrödinger equation; one-dimensional systems; hydrogen atom; spin; Pauli Exclusion Principle; many-electron atoms; molecules. Prerequisites: AUPHY 120 and AUMAT 112. Corequisite: AUMAT 211 is recommended. Note: Credit may be obtained for only one of AUPHY 260, AUCHE 277.

Description: The physics of the Universe. Observational methods. Stars, planetary systems, black holes, galaxies. Big Bang cosmology. Prerequisite: AUPHY 120.

AUPHY340 Numerical Methods in Physics Course Page

Description: Computer arithmetic and errors, solution of systems of linear equations, root finding, interpolation, numerical quadrature, and numerical solutions of ordinary differential equations. Applications from physics are included. Prerequisite: AUCSC 111, AUMAT 120, AUPHY 120 or 250, AUMAT 112. Note: Credit may be obtained for only one of AUPHY 340, AUCSC 340, AUMAT 340.

AUPHY360 Quantum Mechanics Course Page

Description: The breakdown of classical physics. Topics include: wave packets and uncertainty relations, the Schrodinger equation and simple systems, postulates and interpretation of quantum mechanics, operator methods, angular momentum and spin, central force problems and the hydrogen atom. Prerequisites: AUMAT 211; one of AUCHE 277, AUPHY 260. Note: Credit may be obtained for only one of AUCHE 377 and AUPHY 360.

Description: Experiments in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, optics, and quantum mechanics. Measurement theory, experiment design and analysis, and scientific writing. Prerequisites: Any senior Physics course.

AUPHY480 History of Physics and Mathematics Course Page

Description: Integrated history of mathematics and physics, emphasizing the scientific revolution and the subsequent development of mathematics and physics as distinct disciplines. Prerequisite: AUMAT 211 and one of AUPHY 250, 260, or AUCHE 277. Note: Credit may be obtained for only one of AUPHY 480 or AUMAT 480.

Description: Experiments in classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, optics, and other senior physics topics. Prerequisite: AUPHY 291 (2016) or 391; consent of the instructor.
